House Church Is Covenant You are standing in line at the grocery store. You notice a man or woman in front of you. Your eyes meet, you say, “Hi. How about this cold weather?” The person answers, “At least it’s sunny.” And you have a nice conversation for the next few minutes. You don’t know the person’s name. You likely will never see them again. You have no relationship with them. You have no responsibility for them. Your son or daughter is a teen and there seems to be nothing but trouble. They obey only by threat. They seem to think they are smarter than Dad or Mom. There is worry every time they leave the house, every time they are out of sight, even when it is just to school. They are the principal subjects of your prayer life. You know them well. You birthed them. You cared for them from a little bundle in your arms to the bruises of Little League. You have relationship with them. You have responsibility for them. This is called Covenant. No matter what, through thick and thin, good and bad, you will be there.

![]() You will not forsake them. You will train, you will discipline because you love them. Love. That is the core of covenant. Church should be like that. The Bible has much to say about our love for one another. It tells us that God is love, that because of love Jesus went to the cross and died for forgiveness of our sins. Because of love. If God loves us this much, shouldn't we love those in our spiritual family the same way? Shouldn't there be a sharing of life in the spiritual family? Shouldn't there be relationship, responsibility and accountability? If there is love, there is no bondage. Like the parent guiding the teen through treacherous waters, there is responsibility, yet liberty. We are not perfect, but this is the belief of house church. In the smaller settings such close relationships are possible. At the same time we are part of the larger church and, ultimately, to the church universal. In Christ we are brothers and sisters, with love for all––fulfilling the commandment of Jesus: Love each other.
